Paul Atreides is the son of Duke Leto and his bound concubine, the Lady Jessica, an adept of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. Unknown to all but a few, Paul may be the Kwisatz Haderach, a mentally adept being with powerful precognitive abilities - the result of the Bene Gesserit's eons-old breeding program. When Paul is 15, House Atreides is asked by the Emperor of the known universe to take control of the planet Arrakis (Dune) in order to harvest the Spice, Melange, an awareness drug required for intergalactic travel and found only in the sands of this desert planet. However, there are plots within plots being formulated against House Atreides, and among the conspirators is the Emperor himself. With his gift of prescience, coupled with the aid of the Fremen, Paul must overcome massive odds and the cunning plots of the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. As Paul and the Fremen begin their clash with the Harkonnens, they hurtle toward the inevitable: a confrontation with the Emperor and his elite troops, the seemingly invincible Sardaukar.

The troubles begin when stewardship of Arrakis is transferred by the Emperor from the Harkonnen Noble House to House Atreides. The Harkonnens don't want to give up their privilege, though, and through sabotage and treachery they cast young Duke Paul Atreides out into the planet's harsh environment to die. There he falls in with the Fremen, a tribe of desert dwellers who become the basis of the army with which he will reclaim what's rightfully his. Paul Atreides, though, is far more than just a usurped duke. He might be the end product of a very long-term genetic experiment designed to breed a super human; he might be a messiah. His struggle is at the center of a nexus of powerful people and events, and the repercussions will be felt throughout the Imperium. i jeszcze jedno anonimowe The year is 10191, the story is centred around Arrakis, also known as Dune. It is a desert planet with a valuable, unique commodity, the spice Melange. Melange is used to enable space travel and "extend life and expand conciousness" (you really need to read the book to get the full meaning of this !). Ultimate power over Melange production is ultimate power in the universe. The inhabitants of this universe are humans, living in a feudal society of Great Houses (rather like Clans) ruled by Dukes and Barons who answer to the Emperor and the council of Great Houses. Key Characters are: Paul Atriedes, son of Duke Leto Atreides. Shaddam IV, The Emperor of the Known Universe. House Atreides, led by Duke Leto Atreides and his aides. House Harkonnen, led by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and his aides. The Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, a pervasive and powerful organisation of women with a breeding program to create a super being, the Kwisatz Haderach. The Spacing Guild, holder of the space travel monopoly. The Fremen, indigenous inhabitants of Arrakis. Plot Summary (Yeah, Right :) The Emperor is worried that Duke Leto and House Atreides have trained an army superior to his elite Sardaukar troops and conspires with Baron Harkonnen to eliminate the Duke and House Atreides. However, they did not expect the "premature" product of the Bene Gesserit's breeding program and the Fremen's influence in their plan.

In this time, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice melange. The spice extends life, the spice expands consciousness, the spice is vital to space travel. The Spacing Guild and its navigators, who the spice has mutated over four thousand years, use the orange spice gas which gives them the ability to fold space. That is travel to any part of the universe without moving. Oh yes, I forgot to tell you, the spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe : a desolate, dry planet with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as Fremen who have long held a prophecy, that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom. The planet is Arrakis, also known as... DUNE.” (Dune by Frank Herbert) This starts the beginning to one of the most memorable worlds in Science Fiction. Arrakis or Dune is the creation of SF author Frank Herbert. It is a world and universe full of complex cultures, histories and interactions. This world belongs in the same class as Larry Niven’s Ringworld. Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, Philip Jose Farmer’s Riverworld and many others. Mr. Herbert created a world inhabited with complex characters and ideas as well. He explores Arrakis through several books in a connected series. Dune was the first book in the series and became a classic rapidly. It tells the story of young Paul Atreides. He arrives on Arrakis with his father Duke Leto and mother the Lady Jessica. Paul meets the Fremen and learns about survival on the planet. The Atreides family must contend with the ruthless Harkonnens throughout the book. Dune is an important world because it produces Spice, a substance needed by starship pilots. Paul eventually becomes known as Muad'dib, leading the Fremen to their destiny. This is just the skeleton of an intricate plot that is full of layers.
