Economy Grew 9.9% in 2005: Statistics
Xinhua News, Jan. 25, 2006 - China's economy grew 9.9 percent in 2005 on the back of improved efficiency, mild inflation and enhanced vitality, Li Deshui, director of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), announced at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday morning. Preliminary estimates show that gross domestic product (GDP) for the year stood at 18.23 trillion yuan (US$2.26 trillion), Li said. The rate was marginally lower than the 10.1 percent growth in 2004. AIDS on the Rise
Xinhua News, January 25, 2006 - The incidence of AIDS is still on the rise in China, according to a joint assessment report on the country's HIV/AIDS situation that released on Wednesday. The number of new HIV/AIDS infections in China was about 70,000 in 2005, with 25,000 deaths reported across the country, according to the report. The report added that intravenous drug use and unprotected sex were the main causes of infection. China currently has about 650,000 people living with HIV/AIDS including about 75,000 AIDS patients. The assessment was jointly released by the Ministry of Health, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, and the World Health Organization during the 2005 Update on the HIV/AIDS Epidemic and Response in China.

Two Chinese people die of bird flu: WHO
Xinhua, Jan. 11, 2006 - Two Chinese people, previously reported sickened by bird flu, have died, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. The deaths occurred in a 10-year-old girl from the Guangxi region, reported on December 7, and a 35-year-old man from Jiangxi Province, reported on December 16, said Roy Wadia, spokesman of WHO's Beijing Office. "This does not mean that human infection of bird flu is out of control in China," said Wadia. "But it's a warning reminder that it is a very serious disease."

China eyes increased energy cooperation with US
Yahoo News, Dec. 30, 2005 - China and the United States should increase co-operation on energy issues ranging from crude oil production overseas to civilian nuclear programs, China's top economic planning body said in a statement on its web site. China Starts Adjusting Resource Prices
Chinanews, Dec. 27, 2005 - The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced on Monday to appropriately raise the producer price of natural gas all around China starting from Dec. 26. Oil and gas fields can raise their producer prices of natural gas for industrial production and daily use in cities by a margin of 50 to 150 yuan (US$6.2 to $15.5) per 1,000 cubic meters and that for chemical fertilizers by 50 to 100 yuan per 1,000 cubic meters according to their specific situations. China to have over 440 mln mobile phone users by end of next year
Xinhua, Dec. 17, 2005 - The number of mobile phone users will reach above 440 million by the end of 2006, and fixed line subscribers will rise to over 380 million, said an expert with the Ministry of Information Industry (MII). Statistics with the MII show that the number of phone users has been growing steadily this year. The number of new mobile phone users is still higher than that of new fixed line users in the first ten months this year. By the end of this year, Chinese fixed line subscribers will amount to 350 million and mobile phone users 390 million, predicted Yang Qing, expert with China Academy of Telecommunications, at a conference held this week. Statistics with the MII also indicate that at the end of October, the number of fixed line users reached 348 million and mobile phone subscribers 383 million. China Telecom has 60.9 percent of all fixed line users, China Netcom 34.6 percent, and China Railcom 4.4 percent, said Yang. Among the mobile phone users, China Mobile accounts for 66.8 percent, China Unicom's GSM subscribers 24.6 percent and CDMA 8.6 percent, she said.
