"Spells of Gold" w "Przekroju" - warto?

Zauważyłem dzisiaj w kiosku, że do "Przekroju" dołączono gierkę - "Spells of Gold"; połączenie crpga z handlówką.

"Spells of Gold

All that is said to be gold does not always glitter, and Spells of Gold is no exception. Have you ever hankered for an exciting, swashbuckling life as an accountant? Does the thought of earning imaginary money through absolute tedium spark your imagination? If so then this is the game for you.

If you think of an RPG, you will most likely conjure up ideas of slaying dragons and defeating evil sorcerers on a quest to save the world. So you would expect to go out on your epic journey with swords of power and armour of the Gods, not a special carrier bag that lets you hold as much shopping as you like. Handy for Tescos it may be, but it hardly inspires riveting gameplay. In Spells of Gold you begin your quest as an orphan who has been raised by a kingly merchant. Once he has snuffed it you are free to carry on his work using his special bag you swiped from his dying hands. With this bag you can strike out your own fortune as a trader and along the way get involved in pointless quests, such as delivering letters. Whilst all the time learning useless abilities so that you may discover the hidden secret of the universe, that it is very dull indeed.

Graphically SOG uses an isometric 3D approach that would give quite a lot of RPGs a run for their money, that is if it had been release in 1995. Backgrounds are completely static and although look fairly pretty are redundant for the most part as they are barren of all interest. Also if you do manage to continue playing this for longer than it takes to eat your own tongue you will notice that everywhere is exactly the same. The towns may have different names and slight changes to layout but that is all. These static cities of fun are inhabited by several blobby little pixels called characters. However not content with looking the same as each other they also tell you exactly the same thing as the last. Within the towns are various shops, trading posts etc. Here you can buy and sell items (the meat and potatoes of the game), get news of which there is none and get exciting quests such as the aforementioned deliver a letter; or if youre really lucky, a parcel!

Stepping out of the town you are at the mercy of pigmy thieves, damn their eyes. These nefarious midgets demand protection money to pass through their territory, refuse to pay and youve got a fight on your hands. The combat system as you may have guessed mirrors the game in its complexity and skill required. But here I have managed to condense it down for you: click the left mouse button until one of you is dead. And so this goes on. You will discover that there are lots of towns to go visit, you may even for the first couple of these hold out hopes of something interesting being hidden in one of them, but alas no, the most exciting thing you will find is that the price of wood is very reasonable there. But disappointing though this may be it is sadly the whole point of the game. What SOG wants to be is Elite in a different setting. To some extent it does a good job of this with prices fluctuating and plenty of profit to be made for all you wannabe Del Boys out there.

Sound in the game is rudimentary and for the most part forgettable, with nothing sticking in your mind as really good or bad. Apart from the opening sequence where you heritage is explained, there is no voice acting as trade and quest are navigated through text boxes.

As with all RPGs you can buy or acquire new equipment and skills as you progress through the game. Various swords and armour can be bought, plus if youre feeling inclined you can learn skills at schools found in the larger towns. These can be of a variety of trades, such as magic. Unfortunately as you will generally only be beating up midgets it all feels a bit of a waste of time, unless you have a deep hatred for diddymen. Also a pre requisite for an RPG is a plot of some kind. Again SOG tries to deliver this but it is done in such a poor way that for the most part you will be oblivious to it. Even if you do start to get onto the path of one of the stories hidden deep within the game, it never captivates your interest or makes anything easier or more interesting for you.

So what the hell is this game? The main problem I have with Spells of Gold is that for all it tries it is not an RPG. Its is in fact a basic trading game, but rather than embrace this medium it seems the makers got scared and have attempted to half heartedly attach a substandard role playing game onto it. This results in the whole experience feeling half done with no areas allowed to shine. Graphics and sound are poor, plot is hidden to the point of non-existence and the RPG element is laughable to say the least. If you like having nothing to do other than travel from place to place selling your wares and you cant, get a job as a gypsy then you may find some merit in here. But for the rest of us I can only advise you to steer clear."
