Traveling in Poland

You can choose from different means of transport, private or public carriers in Poland. Polish Public Railways (PKP) is the biggest Polish public carrier. If you want to travel by train, you should visit the PKP website: https://www.pkp.pl/ where you can find train timetables and reduced price tickets available. You can also get information at 94-36 (the number is the same in every bigger city) and find out the details. You can visit https://rozklad.pkpik.pl/bin/query.exe/en to search trains schedule and most convenient connections, considering your price/time preference on the type of a train: local, express, Inter City.

If you are planning e.g. a trip from Warsaw to Krakow, you can receive all the information about departure time of an InterCity train after sending an SMS to 7117. Such an SMS is charged 1 PLN + VAT. The information on how to write a question is available at https://www.intercity.pl/23. Unfortunately, you have to ask your Polish friends for help, because the information at the site is available only in Polish.

If you begin your journey in Warsaw and you want to travel by an express or an InterCity train you can book your ticket in advance on the Internet. There are no additional charges for online booking, and you collect your ticket at the ticket office at the Central Railway Station or on a train. Information on booking system can be found at https://www.intercity.pl/scripts/train/index.php?action=reserve. At the moment of the ticket purchase, you can always ask if you have a right to a reduction or special offer rates.

You can travel alone, with your family, friends or with your favourite pet. Anyone can travel with a dog provided that they buy a ticket for their pet. If you travel in second class of a local train, the price of your dog’s ticket is 50% the normal price. A dog while on the train must wear a muzzle and must be kept on a lead. It can’t sit on the seat next to you. If you travel by night, the dog must stay quiet. You are responsible for cleanness of the compartment. If people travelling in the same compartment refuse to travel with your beloved pet, even if it is the best-trained dog in the world, your four-legged friend won’t be able to travel with you. In such case, you can buy out all berths in a sleeping car and take your dog with you without any problems. You always have to remember to take the certificate of your dog’s vaccination. All these regulations don’t apply to guide dogs of the blind.

You can also take your bike with you and transport it by train. You have to buy a ticket for your bike and leave it in the luggage compartment. If there is no luggage compartment in the train, than you have to get into the first vestibule in the first car or go to the end of the train to the last vestibule in the last car. Local trains sometimes have special compartments for persons with extra luggage - you may use it to travel with your bike.

You don’t have to carry your entire luggage with you. You can send it by the conductor parcel service thanks to the “post today – receive today” service. A package up to 10 kg and less than 20x40x50cm, with the name of the sender and the addressee, the name of the station where it was posted and where it will be collected plus the information on the content can be handed to the guard or left at the station at the conductor parcels point (present on major train stations). You pay 25 PLN if you give it to the guard. The second option will cost you 10PLN more than the first one. The staff of conductor parcels point can collect the package for you from the train for 10 PLN.

Last minute PKP offers are worth travellers’ attention. You can find a list of trains, names of primary stations and itineraries on offer at https://www.intercity.pl/83. If you want to take the offer, you must buy a ticket 30 minutes at the earliest before the train departure. You can buy only a second class ticket paying for it (in any case) the reduced price of 11 PLN.

The list of trains adapted to the needs of disabled travellers is currently unavailable on-line. Please contact 94-36 to get more information. Some trains have compartment and/or no-compartment cars in the second class or luggage-passenger cars adapted to the transport of wheelchairs. Because people in a wheelchair have to use chair lifts, they can find at the site the list of PKP stations equipped with them.

Buses are another popular and widely available mean of transport. Both public and private carriers provide bus services. Time schedules, lists of routes, fares and code of rules for travellers are available at bus stations and business places of local companies. In Warsaw, you can book a PKS bus ticket at (+4822) 94-33 and get information about national and international services provided by PPKS-Warszawa. Information on direct bus connections is also available via SMS after sending a message to 7117. There is an independent website gathering and presenting information on bus connections at https://www.rozklady.com.pl/.

Public transport varies from city to city. Therefore, it is difficult to say if a bus, a tramway or the WKD train is the most comfortable, the cheapest and the fastest mean of transport. Fares vary largely as well. Usually you can choose from different types of tickets: single use, daily, weekly, zone, family, group etc. Remember that usually you have to pay for your luggage as well (not the case in Warsaw). Only a few cities give the rules of public transport use at their sites.

Warsaw https://www.warsawtour.bptnet.pl/ and https://www.warszawa.pl/
Cracow https://www.krakow.pl/
Gdansk https://www.gdansk.pl/

Taxi is an easily available mean of transport. In cities, you can choose from taxis belonging to corporations and private ones. In villages, mainly private taxis are available. The most popular corporation in Poland is RADIO TAXI 9191, operating in 58 Polish cities. In each of these cities you can hire a taxi by calling 9191. According to your needs, you can hire a passenger car, a limousine or a minibus. Taxi fares differ largely. Generally, you pay 2 PLN per km in a passenger taxi in Warsaw. Prices in other corporations are similar. It’s advisable to call for a corporation taxi to avoid dishonest taxi drivers who wait outside airports and railway stations. Big corporations provide services like purchase of goods and their delivery at the given address. They also offer to pick up customers from the airport and take them to the specified address. The order can be placed online; of course only in those corporations which have their own site. The site of RADIO TAXI 919 in English can be given as an example. https://www.taximpt.com.pl./taxi_eng.htm (it has not been updated - their new number is 9191)

If you don’t want to rely on public transport, you can rent a car. Offers of car hire companies can be found at the airport, hotels and on the Internet. Conditions of car rental are similar. You have to be at least 23 years old and hold your driving license at least for a year. Charges for renting vary according to the car type, route and duration of a rental period. According to the Polish regulations in force if you travel with a child under 12 years, your passenger has to be adequately protected during a drive. While renting a car you have to give your child’s age and then you will be provided with a car seat adapted to his/her age (for additional charge).https://www.avis.pl/ and https://www.rentacar.sisco.pl/ are given as examples of car hire companies.

shops

Poles seem to have a well-developed taste for Western goods, and stores are becoming better stocked all the time. If you choose to live in any of the larger cities, you shouldn't have much trouble finding the things you need. Luxury items, though, are harder to find. You might have to search out certain stores that consistently stock your favorite items. Be prepared to find Western prices on these items, as well as stereos, and some clothes.

Folk-craft items such as hand-knit clothing, hand-stitched leather goods, and custom jewelry often are inexpensive and widely available. Many Polish cities feature open-air markets where such items are available. In fact, Krakow is famous for its public market, located right in the middle of its town square. Fine crystal glassware is also a favorite gift idea of many visitors to Poland.

Bring the following items if you are concerned about either their cost or availability
