PROWOKACJA

London is one of the most exciting cities in the world, full of things to see and do, with world-famous sights, restaurants, superb shopping and a range of excellent entertainment and nightlife second to none. There are famous sites to see and quiet places to explore. From the great river Thames the whole history of London will unravel before you. From the hustle and bustle of Leicester Square at the heart of London's theater district, to the picturesque lanes of Hampstead village, and the grandeur of Buckingham Palace, London's fascination is its variety. Old and new stand side by side. History, pageantry and tradition mix with the modern, eccentric and avant garde, offering something for everyone.
London was built at the lowest bridgeable point of the Thames and the river has played a major part in its history. London's history goes back to a Roman settlement. Rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666, London expanded rapidly, swallowing up the villages that surrounded it. Today London is a financial and cultural center.
Acres of parkland and grand houses are waiting for your visit. Stately homes offer fascinating insights into the lifestyles, past and present, of the British nobility. Or find castles with thick defense walls, turrets and dungeons. Often these houses are surrounded by beautiful gardens which are worth a visit any time of year.
History, pomp and circumstance are intertwined! London's historical attractions will inspire awe and wonder. You can visit the walls of the original Roman settlement in the financial district, known as the City. You can still see the London of 18th century diarist Samuel Pepys and Charles Dickens and in Baker Street, you can imagine the investigations of Sherlock Holmes in his flat at 221B. Orclose by Westminster Bridge, you can wander through the medieval Abbey and the Palace of Westminster, center of England's government for a thousand years.
The magnificent state rooms of Buckingham Palace are open to the public for two months a year with walks through the Throne Room, the Music Room and the State Dining room. At Kensington Palace the State Apartments and Court Dress collection are open all year round as is St. Paul's cathedral, setting for royal marriages. The majestic Westminster Abbey provides an opportunity to try the medieval art of brass rubbing. On Oxford Street pop into Selfridges with a sumptuous food hall as well as top designer collections. Regent Street musts are John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, and Liberty, a store bursting with an exotic variety of fabrics, china jewelry, clothes and furniture. Nearby is Hamley's, the most famous toy shop in the world, a delight for children of all ages. If you are looking for something truly unique, Harrods, in Knightsbridge, boasts that it can order anything in the world - from a miniature Rolls Royce to a live elephant! New indoor shopping complexes, like Whitelys in Bayswater and Hay's Galleria near London Bridge station, which allow you to eat as well as shop in a comfortable environment.

For the ultimate in elegant English style, try Burberrys in the Haymarket, Simpsons of Piccadilly and Aquascutum in Regent Street. Or the tailors of Savile Row and Jermyn Street can fit you in a traditional look. Carnaby Street was the fashion center of the sixties, but now contains an interesting mix of clothing and gift shops. For chic, designer fashion look on Bond Street and Sloane Street.
Try unearthing treasures at one of London's street markets, such as Camden Passage in Islington (antiques), Portobello Road (curios, silverware, antiques) or Petticoat Lane in Middlesex Street (Sunday mornings only, for clothes, fabrics and curios), famous for its colorful cockney characters. At Covent Garden, a former fruit and vegetable market opposite the Opera House, market stalls and trendy shops sell designer clothes, books, arts, crafts, decorative items and antiques. Food fans find fascination at Billinsgate, Lower Thames Street, the world's most colorful fish market, thriving since the 17th century, or at Smithfield, London's main meat market, best on Mondays and Thursdays.
Piccadilly Circus, at the heart of London's entertainment district, is close to two of London's major attractions, the statue of Eros and the Trocadero Centre. The London nightlife is beyond compare; vital, hip, ever-changing and definitely not to be missed. Bond Street is renowned for its art galleries, antique and jewelry shops as well as boutiques of internationally known fashion designers. West End theaters stage plays and musicals.
