It's great idea, but we must choose the topic. And I have a suggestion; if someone makes a mistake, maybe everybody correct him, for his own good?

(A tourist approaches a shepherd. The sounds of sheep and the outdoors
are heard.)

Tourist: Good afternoon.
Shephrd: Eh, 'tis that.
Tourist: You here on holiday?
Shephrd: Nope, I live 'ere.
Tourist: Oh, good for you. Uh...those ARE sheep aren't they?
Shephrd: Yeh.
Tourist: Hmm, thought they were. Only, what are they doing up in the
trees?
Shephrd: A fair question and one that in recent weeks 'as been much on
my mind. It's my considered opinion that they're nestin'.
Tourist: Nesting?
Shephrd: Aye.
Tourist: Like birds?
Shephrd: Exactly. It's my belief that these sheep are laborin' under
the misapprehension that they're birds. Observe their be'avior.
Take for a start the sheeps' tendency to 'op about the field
on their 'ind legs. Now witness their attmpts to fly from
tree to tree. Notice that they do not so much fly as...plummet.

<Baaa baaa... flap flap flap ... whoosh ... thud.>

Tourist: Yes, but why do they think they're birds?
Shephrd: Another fair question. One thing is for sure, the sheep is not
a creature of the air. They have enormous difficulty in the
comparatively simple act of perchin'.
<Baaa baaa... flap flap flap ... whoosh ... thud.>
Trouble is, sheep are very dim. Once they get an idea in their
'eads, there's no shiftin' it.
Tourist: But where did they get the idea?
Shephrd: From Harold. He's that most dangerous of creatures, a clever
sheep. 'e's realized that a sheep's life consists of standin'
around for a few months and then bein' eaten. And that's a
depressing prospect for an ambitious sheep.
Tourist: Well why don't just remove Harold?
Shephrd: Because of the enormous commercial possibilities if 'e succeeds.

Liar (by Rollins Band)

So you think you gonna live your life alone?
In darkness and seclusion?
Yeah, I know
You’ve been up there and try yo mix with the animals
And they just left you food
......, confusion
But the feeling of loneliness never leaves you
...... of where you go
And then you need me
And your whole world changes
Because everything I say is everything you never wanted to hear
So you drop your defences and you drop all your fears
And you’re so busy feeling good
That you never question why
Tings are going so well
Yu wanna knoe why?

Cause I’m a liar
Yeah
I’m a liar
I help you mind out how to burn your soul
How turn you into me
How turn you into me
Cause I’m A LIAR, A LIAR, A LIAR, A LIAR

I’ll find the finest smile and understanding eyes
Ad I tell ya things that you already know
S you can say: ‘ I really identify with you so much’
I come to you like an affliction
Bt leave you like an addiction
Yu’ll never forget me
Yu wanna know why??

Cause I’m a liar
Yeah
I’m a liar
I help you mind out how to burn your soul
How turn you into me
How turn you into me
Cause I’m A LIAR, A LIAR, A LIAR, A LIAR

I don’t know why i feel the need to lie
Ad cause you so much pain
Mybe it’s something insane?
Mybe it’s something I can’t explain?

Cause all I do is mess you up in lie in you
I’m a liar ooohhh I’m a liar
But if you give me just one more chance
I swear I’ll never lie to you again
Cause now I see the destructable power of lie
The stranger than the truth
I can’t believe I ever hurt you
I swear I’ll never lie to you again
Please just give me one more chance
I’ll never lie to you again
I sewar
I will never tell a lie
I will never tell a lie

No, no
HA, HA, HA
HA, HA, HA
Oh sucker,
Oh sucker,
I’m a liar, YEAH,
I’m a liar, YEAH,
I like you,
I feel you good,
I am a liar, YEAH,
I lie,
I lie,
I lie,
Oh I lie,
I like it,
I lie again and again,
I like it,
I lie again and again,
And I keep lying, I promise...

However I have a strong disbelief in this topic's long lasting life. It will soon sink - it is not shaped in any way, and its only pinciple is to use a different language then the one we are used to, death is upon such therads which consist only of chating.

I can't fulfil Your request, I don't know a word of Latin! All I do know are fixed phrases of all sorts, and I wouldn't mind learning some ex-Roman myself.

As for the topis - we'll see. Maybe it will diverge to few, maybe it will stay as multi-subject discussion, or rather - a training ground. We're going to UE, after all, and some practice will be surely useful.
I' myself, haven't used English from several years, when I leaved one discussion group. I think 40% of my English came from this long-lost chatting - and another 40% from computer games, of course ;)

AK--> I have problems with making any sort of summary so its a long story... I did, for a long time watch cartoons in English as a child, which tgether with my knack for imitating speech and accent probably did me much good. I also played PC games (obvious, if I am on this board, is it not?), at first with all the sort of text translated by my father, and then analized on my own (I never sat with a dictionary in one hand, and the mouse in the other...). In the meantime my sister gave me a bit of her knowledge. No one (including me) knows when I started to understand what I hear or write and speak in English. I had a one year private course, and then began standard, lessons in a private school. So far - finished a four year course (from intermediate to FCE), passed the exam with satisfectory marks, and became genuinely passionate about languages (including mother-tongue of course). That's just about all. I would like to pass Poficiency in some years time, though I am quite lazy... ;-)

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double! letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away. By the 4th yer peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with"z" and "w" with "v". Dabriel--> Including a list of dirty words in Zulu you say? Complete list? Nah, can't be that easy. The Internet is a powerful, but not ideal tool. And ancient Egyptian? ;-) Since you began boasting - six including Polish or six foreign? How long did it take You to learn and at what level would You put your ability to comunicate in them? I'm asking becouse I'd like to hear what amount of will, skill and time does it take to not only operate in bacics but fully use six different languages... Boginka - I can't say too much - wouldn't want to expose my true identity ;P I know six languages including polish - three foreign ones on a pretty high level (english is on of them) and two on a level allowing basic communication. It took me over twenty years (again - from obvious reasons no precise dates ;) to achieve that and I'm still learning... banan--> The language is perhaps (probably) more foralized than the common form, but that is mostly the stuff I use during a standard chat... I like to play using English, like to use more uncommon structures. As a result such things are absorbed by my evryday language. Inversion is as natural to me as the stndrad way.
If by informal, you mean slang then you nedn't test my skills - I do not use slang except some words like "stuff". I don't like it and consider it "trash-language"

Beyond that I have a habbit of talking to myself in order to think more clearly, you should see the faces of pepole on the street when they see a gnomish figure mumbling to itself in English, or beter yet talking to an Afroamerican (that political corectness ;-)) native speaker. ;-)

However I must warn You - FCE (or higher certificates of British Council) aren't just exactly all about walking in, taking the diploma and leaving. They consist of five modules, altogether about five hours. That includes a very iritating thingie called UoE or not abrevited: Use of English. That is more or less like our lessons of grammar in grand school. Exercisies like: Fill the gap using two to five words including the given word:
My hieghbour asked me to take care of her child.
My neighbour asked me........her child. (look)
We have no more petrol left in the car.
The car.............petrol. (run)

And do that for instance twenty times (twenty different pairs of sentences with phrasal verbs, colocations etc.) It maybe isn't difficult, but nevertheless You should at least take a look at similar exercises.
Oh and one more thing - those exams cost a bit - last year when I took FCE it costed about 500zł

PS. Me, abitious? Most of all I am lazy. ;-)

--> The language is perhaps (probably) more foralized than the common form, but that is mostly the stuff I use during a standard chat... I like to play using English, like to use more uncommon structures. As a result such things are absorbed by my evryday language. Inversion is as natural to me as the stndrad way.

i can see that:) well, i guess the case is closed:)

inversion may be natural to you, and it's fun to use, but it's mostly used in literature, not common speech:)

Boginka - I can imagine that. I remember when few years ago I was explaining to an English-speaking tourist how to find a Łokietek square. The most funny thing was, it happen in a tourist center ;)
Such a service we have in this country.

I know that FCE is a far more tough exam than any other, but it's also exensive as well, so I've just give it up, when I saw a bill of my friend who just passed the lowest level - just as you wrote, this isn;t for anybody, even if he knows English. Thank you very much, too many levels...
And laziness doesn't exclude ambition! It's actually an opposition - I never met a hard-working man who had any higher ambitions than have just ordinary, but little rich and comfortable life.

Soul - I hope you'll join the subject, would you? :)

AK--> But on the other hand FCE does give some advantages, and lets you test youself in some more compelx situations than the evryday English requires. If you should have extra money amd ever wish to test yourelf it is a good idea to take an exam. What do you mean by : "Too many levels?" There are only therre exam levls: FCE, CAE, PCE and can be takien inedepedently. In fact yoy can simply come from the street and sing up for a sesion in June or in December, the only question is will you pass it that way...

Although already FCE requires a bit different English than the evryday - i.e. phrasal verbs like run out of instead of end, look after instead of take care and so on, it might be helpful in obtaining more complex ability to comunicate. Well maybe not the exam itself, but the exercises can be even interesting when given in proper doses. ;-) (I sometimes had four hours a week of only senstence transormations, so it wasn't much of a pleasurable activity ;-)) So don't say "no!" at once. The only bad thing is that it IS costly... The English found a good way to earn money on foreigners. ;-)

Soul-->I agree: you are all so smart !!! ;-)

Boginka - Hmm... Then someone just sucked off some money from the poor guy :(
Still, I don't have any spare money yet. But if it would change someday, will try, if you say it's worth it... Despite that only complex situation I have, which requires advanced English, is watching a DVD in original :)
I'm not saying no, I'm just saying - no - not now, mayle later. And I'm sure I need some additional education first. When I tried to translate one of my stories for use of a group of English speaking people, they pointed some of my persistent mistakes I'm still making. Such is my English...

AK--> Oh don't worry, mine isn't much better. I'll probably fight a long battle against spelling mistakes and comas. If you ever need details about BC Certificates you can count on me as an information source. If you'd like I could even scan some old pre FCE test and exercises.
And would it be impolite if I asked what did your friend's bill look like?

Boginka - Scans would be nice. I could see what I shall expect. Of course, nothing important - for certain, I'm not expecting to get my hands on any extra money this year. Perhaps even in next one too...
I wouldn't be impolite, but I have unprecised data about this info. But I know that he said something about 5 or 6 levels, each with exam, and each about 800 plz. So, it look rather heavy to take by his wife ;)
