QUESTION Did suit designer Hugo Boss design the tailored black uniforms for Himmler's feared SS in the Thirties?

THIS story first appeared in the Austrian current affairs magazine Profil in 1997 when Swiss bank account lists from the National Socialist era were made available to the public, and the company name 'Hugo Boss, Metzingen' showed up in the accounts.

In response, company financial executive Jrg-Viggo Mller approached historian Elisabeth Timm from Tbingen in Germany with a request to research the full history of Hugo Boss AG for eventual publication.

Her report detailed how Hugo Boss had established his company in Metzingen, Germany, in 1923, making work overalls and raincoats.

In 1931, he became a Nazi party member and won contracts to make SS, SA (Storm Trooper) and HJ (Hitler Youth) uniforms.

The inspiration for the SS uniform - black with occult symbols - came from Heinrich Himmler who was well aware of the terrifying power of these garments.

The uniforms were introduced in 1932, and the Hugo Boss company designed the cloth and manufactured the clothes.

From 1940 until the end of the war, 150 Eastern Europeans, mostly Poles, and 30 French PoWs were engaged in forced labour at the factory producing these uniforms.

In 1946, Hugo Boss was identified as 'an opportunist of the Third Reich' and was called upon to make financial atonement in the sum of 100,000 marks, payable to the state. The fine hadn't been paid when he died in 1948.

Uwe and Jochen Holy, grandchildren of the founder by marriage, took over the management of the fashion brand at the end of the Sixties, and turned it into an internationallyfamed house of fashion.

Most recently, Hugo Boss's surviving son Sigfried, 83, was quoted as saying: 'Of course my father belonged to the Nazi party.

But who didn't belong back then?

The whole industry worked for the Nazi army.' Oliver Hensen, Chester
